My business is 26% black owned but has been excluded from a number of tenders because of pre-qualification criteria for tenders being set at being at least 51% black owned. I’ve seen in the news though that this practice has been scratched by the courts. Is this true?

I have a construction company which has been hard hit by the Covid-pandemic and although I have managed to keep our doors open and not retrench my employees, we are in dire straits. I understand that there are some tax relief measures which I can access to assist my company. Is this true?

The year 2020, or 20plenty as it was commonly referred to when the new decade commenced, has over the last few months, primarily as a result of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, turned out to be an unprecedented time in our history. This is not only true for South Africans, but for all countries and people across the globe. Various negative effects are culminating from and being amplified this virus, not the least of which are medical and economic in nature. All indications are that the world is facing the deepest recession and most challenging health and economic crisis in last 100 years, which will affect everyone at some point and in some way or another.

I have a young business that is developing well. But I need to appoint more staff. I’ve heard that there are tax incentives for employing youth. How do these work?

I own a small shopping complex. A key tenant, who must give six months’ notice if they don’t renew their lease, has just given notice. I don’t have a problem with that, but with months to go before they exit they have now stopped trading. This will have a big impact on feet to the complex if they don’t trade and I’ve asked them to continue trading until they vacate the premises, but the client refuses and says he’s cutting his losses. Can I force him to trade for the remainder of the lease agreement?
